Bot Auto Autonomous Truck

AsianFin – Bot Auto, the autonomous trucking startup founded by TuSimple co-founder and former CEO Hou Xiaodi, announced that it has successfully completed its first fully driverless hub-to-hub verification run in Houston.

The milestone comes just two years after the company’s founding and marks a major step forward in the commercialization of autonomous freight transport.

“This verification run is an important waypoint, but not the final destination,” Hou said in a statement. “True success means autonomy consistently and safely outperforming humans on a per-mile cost basis. At Bot Auto, driverless means no one—no driver in the seat, no operator in the back, no remote controller. Full autonomy is the only acceptable standard.”

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Houston, Bot Auto focuses on operating a Transport-as-a-Service (TaaS) fleet for freight customers, deploying SAE Level 4 autonomous trucks. The company leverages advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and autonomous systems to enhance logistics efficiency while promoting sustainability.

Bot Auto Founder and CEO Hou Xiaodi

Hou Xiaodi, Bot Auto’s founder and CEO, is widely recognized as a leading AI and computer vision expert. He is the most-cited Chinese PhD worldwide in the field and gained international attention for his pioneering work at TuSimple. In 2004, Hou co-authored the paper “Saliency Detection: A Spectral Residual Approach”, later presented at CVPR 2007 and cited over 4,000 times.

In 2015, Hou co-founded TuSimple with Chen Mo, focusing on Level 4 autonomous trucks. Under their leadership, TuSimple achieved milestones including the world’s first public road test of an autonomous heavy-duty truck in Arizona, completing a 128-kilometer driverless journey in December 2025. TuSimple went public on NASDAQ, reaching a market capitalization of over US$7 billion, before delisting and pivoting away from autonomous trucking in 2024—a move Hou publicly criticized.

“I left TuSimple because its pivot was laughable—like Messi announcing he’s switching to basketball,” Hou said. “Now, I am starting again with Bot Auto, focused on autonomy and operational excellence.”

With an initial team of just eight engineers, the company developed a machine learning framework in four months that Hou claims matches the output of a 100-person team. Bot Auto’s decision-making system is principle-based, aiming to deliver explainable AI for autonomous trucking.

“Advances in AI have simplified development, reduced costs, and allowed us to build autonomous systems that are operationally ready,” Hou said. “We are riding the second wave of autonomous driving.”

Bot Auto has already initiated fully autonomous commercial operations between Houston and San Antonio, albeit with a safety driver onboard for monitoring. The company plans to extend these operations to fully driverless freight transport between hubs in the coming months.

Hou emphasizes that Bot Auto is an operations-first company, focusing on providing freight services rather than just selling technology. “For a technology-first company, operations might stop at night. For us, vehicles must run efficiently 24×5,” he said. The company has successfully migrated daytime perception systems to nighttime operation, allowing continuous logistics operations.

The startup has also received several letters of intent for logistics and shipping partnerships, positioning Bot Auto for rapid commercial scaling. Hou is committed to a long-term vision, rejecting the short-term, venture-capital-driven exit strategies that characterize many Silicon Valley startups.

Headquartered in Houston, Bot Auto benefits from the city’s infrastructure and logistics ecosystem, providing an ideal testing ground for hub-to-hub autonomous freight operations. The company’s vehicles are designed to improve efficiency, reduce labor costs, and contribute to sustainability by optimizing route planning and energy consumption.

Hou concluded, “As the founder, I am determined to see this through to success. Bot Auto combines next-generation AI technology with disciplined execution. Our mission is clear: fully autonomous, safe, and operationally superior freight transport.”

Bot Auto’s recent milestone demonstrates the potential for autonomous trucking to reshape the logistics industry, setting a new benchmark for innovation, safety, and operational efficiency in commercial freight transport.
