Hidden deep within China's vast landscape, the mysterious Nine-Tiered Demon Tower in Qinghai remains one of the most enigmatic sites, drawing countless curious visitors yet exuding a sense of awe and fear. According to legend, King Gesar imprisoned demons within the tower, adding to its mystique.
In 1940, a tomb raider under the warlord Ma Bufang stumbled upon this ancient burial site, known as the Xuewei No.1 Tomb. Intrigued by the treasures within the first chamber, they plundered it for three days. However, when they attempted to enter the second chamber, something eerie occurred. Soldiers discovered a pile of animal bones, and suddenly, they went mad, firing at their comrades. Even the fearless Ma Bufang was terrified, abandoning both the treasure and the site in haste.
The tomb was soon buried by sand and dust, as if it had never been disturbed, lying dormant for decades. Then, in 1996, it resurfaced when it was rediscovered in a remote canyon, surrounded by hundreds of smaller tombs, later named the Hot Water Tomb Cluster. Archaeologists were astounded by its scale. However, the Xuewei No.1 Tomb had been looted multiple times, devastating the historical heritage.
The tomb's architecture is unique, with three layers of stone walls and wooden planks crossing the mound, resembling a subterranean palace. Inside, archaeologists uncovered six horses sacrificed for the tomb owner, along with a wealth of precious artifacts, including gold, silver, and bronze items, as well as a rare Persian silk with inscriptions from the 8th century—an incredible find. These treasures spoke volumes about the tomb owner's nobility and status.
Yet, during the excavation of the first and second chambers, the team made the unexpected decision to halt further digging. This decision sparked rumors that the ominous tales surrounding the tomb had spooked the archaeologists. However, the true reason was that the current excavation techniques were not advanced enough, leading to damage to some of the artifacts. Knowing the priceless value of these items, the archaeologists chose to stop and wait for better technology to safely explore the deeper secrets of the Nine-Tiered Demon Tower.
In 2018, a major tomb robbery rocked Qinghai, with thieves stealing 646 items from the Xuewei No.1 Tomb, including 16 first-class relics. The stolen goods were valued at a staggering 180 million yuan. While police managed to recover some of the items, the incident highlighted the urgent need for better protection of these historical treasures.
Though the full secrets of the Nine-Tiered Demon Tower remain hidden, advancements in technology and archaeology may one day allow us to uncover its remaining mysteries. We can only hope that these priceless cultural relics are preserved for future generations to appreciate the brilliance of ancient civilizations.
