The water quality of Taihu Lake has remained stable at Grade III for two consecutive years, with several indicators reaching their best levels since 2007, according to Wuxi municipal bureau of ecology and environment in Jiangsu province.
China's surface water quality system is categorized into five grades, with Grade I being the highest. Grade III is considered fairly good and suitable for most aquatic life.
The ecological environment of Taihu Lake continues to show steady improvement, encompassing water quality, the overall water environment, and biodiversity.
In 2025, the total phosphorus concentration, nitrogen concentration, and comprehensive trophic state index of Taihu Lake water in Wuxi achieved their best levels since 2007. The total phosphorus concentration of all 13 major rivers flowing into Taihu Lake in the city hit Grade II, with five rivers seeing better levels than in the previous year. Taihu Lake has maintained safe summer conditions for 18 consecutive years.
The success of Taihu Lake's management is evident not only in the monitoring data but also in the vibrant resurgence of biological activity. Statistics indicate that the number of species in the Taihu Lake basin jumped by 280 year-on-year, resulting in 7,179 species now inhabiting it. Among them are 150 nationally protected species, including 23 classified as national Class I and 127 as Class II.
jrhz.infoA total of 65 fish species have been recorded in Taihu Lake, marking an increase of 15 since the implementation of the fishing ban in 2010. New sightings in Jiangsu include the Acer miaotaiense and the white-necked long-tailed pheasant. Each winter, large flocks of black-headed gulls migrate from Siberia to Taihu Lake, creating a breathtaking spectacle that attracts many tourists.
These remarkable achievements are the result of a systematic, precise, and scientific management approach. Wuxi has focused on managing industrial, domestic, and agricultural pollution sources. Ecological restoration efforts are ongoing, with over 5 million cubic meters of silt removed from Taihu Lake and 3.5 million cubic meters from Gehu Lake throughout the year. In terms of blue-green algae prevention and control, the city has constructed 15 algae-water separation stations, significantly enhancing its emergency response capabilities.
