Mica R. Endsley
Bainbridge’s Ironies of Automation was a prescient description of automation related challenges for human performance that have characterised much of the 40 years since its publication. Today a new wave of automation based on artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced across a wide variety of domains and applications. Not only are Bainbridge’s original warnings still pertinent for AI, but AI’s very nature and focus on cognitive tasks has introduced many new challenges for people who interact with it. Five ironies of AI are presented including difficulties with understanding AI and forming adaptations, opaqueness in AI limitations and biases that can drive human decision biases, and difficulties in understanding the AI reliability, despite the fact that AI remains insufficiently intelligent for many of its intended applications. Future directions are provided to create more human-centered AI applications that can address these challenges.

Paul M. Salmon et al.
As the UK’s Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is worth reflecting on our discipline’s contribution, current state, and critical future endeavours. We present the perspectives of 18 EHF professionals who were asked to respond to five questions regarding the impact of EHF, contemporary challenges, and future directions. Co-authors were in agreement that EHF’s impact has been only limited to date and that critical issues require resolution, such as increasing the number of suitably qualified practitioners, resolving the research-practice gap, and increasing awareness of EHF and its benefits. Frequently discussed future directions include advanced emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the development of new EHF methods, and enhancing the quality and reach of education and training. The majority felt there will be a need for EHF in 75 years; however, many noted that our methods will need to adapt to meet new needs.
Figure 1. Co-author ratings of EHF’s impact. Participants who identified as a researcher only are represented in blue, as a practitioner only in green, and as both researcher and practitioner in orange.
Aoife Mohan et al.
Despite technological advancements, human decision errors still contribute to civil aviation accidents. This study investigated whether flight time, cognitive reflection, task-load, metacognition, and perceived stress predicted decision-making (DM) performance during two in-flight training simulations with 104 commercial pilots at Bogota International Airport. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the predictors accounted for 56% of the variance. Cognitive reflection, flight time and performance task load emerged as significant positive predictors. Cognitive reflection significantly moderated the relationship between flight time and DM performance, with pilots scoring lower on cognitive reflection showing improved DM with increased flight time, while controlling for performance task load. The study did not find significant relationships between stress metacognition and DM performance. The study emphasises the significance of advanced training methods in improving pilots’ DM, especially for those with low cognitive reflection. Future research should expand to multiple airlines, address gender balance, and incorporate direct measures of metacognitive monitoring.
